Project Description

“I wear my heart upon my sleeve.”

BASED ON SHAKESPEARE’S OTHELLO

Seven theatre artists from the US toured for one month to Queretaro, Mexico to work with seven Mexican counterparts to make theatre based on our diverse though collective experiences. Utilizing the tools of Action Theatre and Theatre of the Oppressed, we explored the text and themes of Shakespeare’s Othello as they related to our group. Culminating in a workshop piece including improvised and original music, dance, image theatre, and scenes of Shakespeare’s text, No Soy Lo Que Soy was a bilingual, cultural exchange of talent, methodology, emotion, and artistic expression centered around our challenge to communicate in an ever modernizing and globalized world. No Soy Lo Que Soy (I Am Not What I Am) performed for a week at the Teatro Metropolitano in Queretaro.

The music playing was written specifically for this production by Dano Coutino and performed by Emma Undine Wiegand. Lyrics from Shakespeare’s Othello.
